U.S. Department of Energy - Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
Bioenergy Technologies Office
The following are links to information on solicitations offered by the Department of Energy (DOE) and other federal programs and offices that may be investing in biomass and related renewable technologies.
Bioenergy Small Business Solicitations
The Bioenergy Technologies Office has an annual Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) / Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) solicitation. The topics are generally posted in the first quarter of the fiscal year (FY) (between October and December). The exact schedule is posted on the Office of Science SBIR / STTR website.
The solicitation focuses on areas where small businesses can have an impact on the biomass industry. Previous topics include feedstock logistics, bio-oil conversion technology, waste-to-energy, process intensification, and biomass cookstoves. Expanded descriptions of these topics are also available at the Office of Science SBIR / STTR website.
FY 2013 Bioenergy Technologies Office Topics
- Measuring and Improving Biomass Quality Throughout the Feedstock Supply Chain (posted in November)
- Design and Fabrication of Solids Handling for Biomass Conversion Systems (posted in November)
Other FY 2013 DOE Topics Related to Biomass
- Catalysis for the Production of Hydrocarbon Fuels or Chemicals from Mixed-Oxygenates (posted in August)
- Chemical Catalysis of Lignin (posted in August)
Please visit the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy's SBIR page to learn about small business funding opportunities in other EERE research areas.
Biomass Research and Development Initiative (BRDI)
The Biomass Research and Development Initiative (BRDI) is a multi-agency effort to coordinate and accelerate all federal biobased products and bioenergy research and development. BRDI issues annual joint solicitations funded by the U.S. Departments of Energy and Agriculture.

National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)
EERE Program and Office Solicitations
EERE's Financial Opportunities web page provides links to useful resources about financing and incentives for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects for the home, business, industry, utilities, and government. In addition, solicitation information may be accessed directly from certain EERE programs and offices, as well as EERE partnership programs. Sources of this funding information are provided below.
Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP)
FEMP reduces the cost of Government by promoting energy efficiency, water conservation, and the use of solar and other renewable energy for federal buildings and operations. FEMP solicitations may be directed toward energy management firms or may provide funding for other federal agencies. Solicitations are posted on the What's New in FEMP page.
Hydrogen, Fuel Cells & Infrastructure Technologies Office selects research and development (R&D) and other projects through open and competitive procurements.
