BTO Launches the Advanced Roof Top Unit Campaign

May 30, 2013

Large roof top air conditioning units (RTUs) are found on 60% of U.S. commercial buildings. During warm summer months the amount of energy used by older RTUs places a significant burden on the nation’s power supply, and increases the cost of keeping buildings cool. Taking advantage of technologies that improve building energy efficiency is one way that the U.S. can beat the heat while saving money. Retrofitting RTUs with advanced controls can reduce each unit’s energy use by 40%, while replacing each with a more efficient unit can reduce energy use by 50%.

To spur the adoption of more energy efficient technologies in commercial buildings, the Building Technologies Office (BTO) has launched an Advanced Roof Top Unit Campaign (ARC). Running through the fall of 2014, ARC will provide resources to help commercial building owners and operators determine if retrofitting or replacing an RTU can save energy. The campaign will also provide information on available efficient cooling systems, and list best practices that should be followed when replacing or retrofitting existing RTUs.

Join the campaign today!

Last year‘s High Performance Rooftop Unit Challenge spearheaded the manufacture of RTUs operating at 50% or greater efficiency. As these new space conditioning technologies make their way into the marketplace, ARC will connect building owners and manufacturers to make adopting energy efficient technologies more affordable. ARC participants will receive updates on innovative RTU technologies, receive recognition for their activities, gain access to information about rebates and financing, and participate in case studies that will document the effect of better RTU management on energy savings.

Informational Webinar

An informational webinar will be held on June 17, 2013 from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm EST. Participants will learn more about ARC and how they can implement high-efficiency RTU technology in their buildings. The webinar will provide information on energy and cost savings potential, additional benefits of joining ARC, how to join, and what to expect. Two cases studies will also be presented.
