Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport Dedicates 5.4 MW Solar System
February 29, 2012Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and SunPower Corporation dedicated a 5.4 megawatt (MW) solar installation located atop the airport's facilities. SunPower designed and built the solar installation, and will operate and maintain the solar system through a solar services agreement with the airport. The system is expected to generate about 51 percent of the electricity demand at the airport's rental car center, two East Economy parking garages and toll plaza.
The solar project was facilitated in part by Arizona Public Service Company's (APS) Renewable Energy Incentive Program, which offers incentives to customers that help offset the costs of installing solar power. The renewable energy certificates (RECs) produced by the airport's solar system will be used by APS to help meet the utility's renewable energy standard obligation.
